God calls believers to a life of holiness. “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 13:15-16). But living holy lives is a challenge for believers, especially when God’s command stands in contrast to the kind of self-choice and personal autonomy that the world promotes. It is therefore incumbent upon pastors, preachers, and teachers to preach the pursuit of holiness. The believer is a new creature in Christ; he or she is now dead to sin and alive to God. Sin is no longer the master. On the other hand, being in Christ means we have the freedom to live just as God has intended! It is a new, abundant, triumphant, and permanent life. Dr. Steve Lawson said, “Jesus, by subjecting Himself to death, shattered the power of sin over our lives. Jesus broke the authority that sin once had over our lives. The mastery of sin and death has been ended once and for all. It was a fully accomplished and successful mission upon the cross. The benefits are now given without any cost to us.” This truth is worth proclaiming in our preaching and teaching. Preaching the Pursuit of Holiness affirms the need for a Christ-exalting, biblical preaching in the local churches. It is also a call to proclaim solid truths from Scripture, the only definitive authority for holy living. Indeed, faithful preaching of the pursuit of holiness cultivates personal holiness among individual members of the body of Christ. Dr. Lawson said, “As believers, we are ‘alive to God in Christ Jesus’ (Rom. 6:11). Previous to our conversion, we were the very opposite. We were spiritually dead to God and alive to sin. That is the state in which we entered the world. But in the new birth, this was totally reversed. We now are dead to sin and alive to God. We are alive to love God and adore Him. We are made to be fully alive to desire to please God. Now we are alive to pursue holiness in a new life of practical righteousness. We are alive to the truth of God and to love others.”
